Another SF first -- 3 internationally acclaimed pianists onstage for Tango X 3 dance performance

Tango x 3, the second installment of his popular Tango Trilogy, featuring live music from three internationally reputed pianitsts, takes place Friday, August 15 through Sunday, August 17 at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts Theatre (3301 Lyon Street).

Tango X 3 will be the first time three pianists have ever performed Tango music together in a full concert format playing solos, duets, and trios. The artists comprising this world-premiere are two-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto from Brazil; recording artist and cultural ambassador Polly Ferman from Uruguay; and Erika Nickrenz of the wildly popular two-time Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio. Special performances will include the world premiere of two new pieces for three pianos from Tango legend Daniel Binelli as well as offering composed and performed by Neto himself. Also featured in the program will be 2-3 piece suites for piano duet composed by Pablo Ziegler. One of San Francisco's leading Tango dancers/instructors, Christy Cote, and her partner Darren Lees will perform several dances as guest artists. This program is being presented as a benefit for the San Francisco Breast Cancer Emergency Fund.

About the Pianists:
One of the leading interpreters of Tango music, Polly Ferman, captivates audiences with her tremendous performances of works by Gottschalk, Nazareth, Gershwin, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, Piazzolla and Golijov, among others. The Japan Times called her “the Musical Ambassador of the Americas” with extensive tours as a soloist with the Symphonies of San Francisco, Colorado, Vancouver, and Indianapolis, as well as the Tokyo Philharmonic, Philippines Philharmonic, Sâo Paulo State Symphony, the National Symphony of Argentina and Cuba’s Camerata Romeu.

Best known as pianist for the Eroica Trio, Erika Nickrenz is a native of New York, where she made her concerto debut in Town Hall at age eleven. Erika has received the prestigious Rockefeller Award, the Naumburg Award and has been celebrated by Carnegie Hall’s as “America’s Rising Star.” As a member of the Eroica Trio, she has performed with many ensembles worldwide, including the Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, Houston and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, as well as tours with the Budapest Symphony and Prague Chamber Orchestra.

Rio de Janeiro-born and Seattle-based pianist, flutist, and composer Jovino Santos Neto transcends the barriers between classical, jazz, and indigenous Brazilian music. A member of Hermeto Pascoal's legendary band from 1977 to 1992, Neto has built a distinguished reputation as a creative and inspired musician, producer and arranger. Besides performing worldwide, he gives lectures and workshops on Brazilian music and continues to collaborate with his long time mentor Hermeto Pascoal as the music director of the Hermeto Pascoal Big Band.

Booking a circus in SF

Hey everyone,

I am part of a 10 person circus/music performance group called Criss Cross
Circus. We are based out of Hampshire College in western Massachusetts and this
summer we are planning a 4 week May-June tour from the east coast out to
Seattle in our veggie bus. One of our stops is San Francisco.

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding venues that would be interested in booking a small circus show, or bands that would be interested in sharing a show (we do a lot of work with bands in western Mass, so we have a lot of experience with being general crowd winder-uppers and visual entertainment). We would be pretty adaptable but the place would need a semi-legit stage (not just a foot and a half thing in the corner of a bar).

Our website is: http://circusfolkunite.googlepages.com/crisscrosscircus

please contact me at jnf04@hampshire.edu if you have any information that would be at all useful.

thanks! --Juliana

Bay area band is seeking a female vocalist who is fluent in English and French; throw in a dash of keyboard sweetening skills and the fit would be perfect; new project that is goth in nature with a montage of French, French Canadian, and Louisiana music; pros who know what they're about. Descriptive message first, then phone, then studio audition.

Hi Guys,

I just posted a couple of new tunes on my myspace page:

Mill Valley Matinee

Temporary Sanity

The rest of the tunes up there are from my EP, but these are new. I have not final mix/mastered them yet but I think they are in pretty good shape. If you get a chance to listen, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Best wishes,

My name is Gomer Hendrix. I'm looking to hook up with a band.
I've been doing my own thing for awhile. I mostly do private
parties and play with some other bands on call. I've had some
gigs through bay area agents, know tons of cover songs from
many decades, write my own, sing lead and back up vocals and
have tons of experience on electric and acoustic guitar.
My email is gomerhendrix@yahoo.com . Please contact me.

are you a great drummer with strong legs and a kickass attitude?

On October 31, 2007, our band, The Ginger Ninjas (www.myspace.com/gingermyninja.com), and SHAKE YOUR PEACE! (www.ShakeYourPeace.com), launch the "Pleasant Revolution Tour," a rock & roll bicycle tour spanning over 5000 miles and playing over 90 shows from the Sierras in N. California, to the pyramids of Chiapas, Mexico. No sag-wagons, and no buses hauling gear: everything, including the 800 Watt human-powered PA System, will be hauled entirely on bicycle! A 14-person entourage makes the core, joined by bicycle and music enthusiasts all along the route. The tour is expected to last about 4 months.

The goal of The Pleasant Revolution Tour is to share the joys of sustainable and creative living through the spectacle of the bicycle rock & roll road show; to show America that a different way of living is not only possible, but more rewarding; to bring something positive from the U.S. to Mexico. We also hope to promote our music and of course, rock.

We're looking for a professional drummer who also loves biking and adventure to accompany us. YOU NEED TO BE EASY TO GET ALONG WITH AND A STOKED TRAVELER.

Since we're primarily a music tour, and secondly a bike tour, we're not going to be covering 100 miles a day or anything crazy like that. We'll average 20-30 miles a day, but you'll need to be in hearty condition. WE HAVE NO SUPPORT VAN! So all of the drums will be distributed and hauled by members of The Caravan on bicycle.

Compensation: All your food will be provided by the tour. Additionally all your bicycle gear needs will be totally taken care of including your Xtracycle Freeradical (www.Xtracycle.com). You will also share in gig revenues and merchandise/cd revenues.

Due to the extreme adventure nature of this expedition, it's CRUCIAL that you can imagine seeing it through to the end ~ we need someone who's going to roll as strong and long as the tour will.

Organized by the minds behind The Bicycle Music Festival (www.BicycleMusicFestival.com), and the Xtracycle sport utility bike (www.Xtracycle.com).

Yes, we're crazy. Are you?

please contact me ASAP kipchoge at gingerninjas do t com

will be performing in the 30 hour long Y2K7 International Live Looping Festival
this weekend.

I hope you can make it. Here are the details:

Y2K7 INTERNATIONAL LIVE LOOPING FESTIVAL, (largest live looping festival ever

this coming weekend (Friday 8 p.m.- 11 p.m., Saturday 1:00-midnight and Sunday, 1:00 to midnight)

at the Pearl Alley Studios. Held where it has been for the last two years, it is in the middle of the building

The festival opens up with a bang on Friday evening with headliners Erdem Helvacioglu (laptop/guitar) from Turkey,

the famous ECM jazz bassist, Arild Andersen from Norway and noted experimental and eclectic

with myself, Henry and Arild. This show begins at 8 p.m.

About this festival, I can say that after having played in 12 countries over the course of my musical life in a plethora of very creative

experimental, avant garde, new music, electronica, live looping and world beat festivals that this is literally, one of the most

creative and eclectic music festivals on the planet.

all ages are welcome. In fact, kids will love how creative this is, especially during the day concerts.

I'm looking to find more students. I teach guitar, bass, and singing. I love to jam, have my own band, and am always looking for more players to jam with at gigs. Bass players are most welcome to join in the fun, and you seem to be rare among musicians. Please hit me up and visit gomerhendrix.com for more details about me. Thanks for reading. peace out

This Friday, October 12, 2007, Ireland's 32 (San Francisco) hosts a crackerjack team of enlightened redneck hippies and the psychedelic cowboy sounds of the Dedicated Maniacs. This is some serious psychedelic twang featuring songs by New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Band, Dylan and some Texas honky-tonk.

The show is free.

"Throckmorton" will open with their unique style of old timey sounds. Then look for 2 full sets by the Dedicated Maniacs.

The Dedicated Maniacs, featuring:
Mike Berry (guitar, Left Coasting)
Warren Dietzel (drums, Throckmorton)

Hey everyone,

If you're into acoustic / guitar / folk rock / type stuff...

I've been writing & recording in a vacuum for a few weeks, and I'd love to get some objective (i.e., not from my friends & family) feedback. The sound quality isn't great (sorry) -- I'm just looking for artistic criticism. Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

The Floating Corpses looking for drummer Corpse

SynthPunk/Sewer Rock band seeks Drummer
we are searching for a drummer that gets garage rock, has swing, and is foot heavy, but that is open to experimental sounds as well as grooving rock n roll.

We are two musicians, that create tension and flow between us by our sound and instrument choices, tube amp surfy goth rock guitar battling and making out with analog synth waveforms, bluesy organ keyboard collaborating with tweaked live played samples of self recorded obscure sources, low groans and high screaches co-exist with poisoned pop punk melodies and crooning cabaret dramatics. We need our third member, the drummer/percussionist, to hold down the beat, and explore with us. We call ourselves The Floating Corpses. We've been playing together for about 5 years, and both of us were in bands before this, one of us in rock n roll bands, the other in noise bands. We have recorded, toured, and get good gigs, have rehearsal space, etc. We work the underground scenes, not the mainstream; we are a serious band that lives for music, this isn't a hobby, but we arn't professionals per se, although we know how to be professional, we prefer to keep our punk ethics and keep having fun, but we are planning on touring the world.

You can find songs of ours on the web, but we have many sets of new songs that need to be fully brought to life with our new drummer. If you want to try out sometime, email us and tell us a bit about yourself. Check out some songs on www.myspace.com/thefreakmafia

I need to find a drummer and a bassist to be the solid foundation for a Folky Jazy Funk Grass band called Road Head. So far it is me and one guitarist. I play Fiddle mandolin Harmonica Guitar and vocals. I would prefer some one who lives real close to Haight St. To make rehersal easier for everyone involved. I already have some paying gigs lined up and some connections with people who can do quality recording for us. Give me a call at (415) 425-1308 for an audition or email me at jahfunky@yahoo.com

Cheers

I'm a solo singer/songwriter with a loop pedal looking to get a band together in San Francisco. I already have gigs but I am tired of playing with myself on stage in front of people:) I always have random guest musicians and performers, but I want to put something a bit more organized together. I need a bassist and a Drummer. Basically I want a solid rythmn section. I have one guitarist and potentially keys, and myself on guitar, fiddle, harmonica, mandolin and vocals. You can email me at jahfunky@yahoo.com

Concert at the Red Vic on November 8th

Dear Friends,

Thanks again for all your feedback on my new song, Buena Vista Park! I really appreciate your comments on that song! The next song in my demo, Fade, will be posted on my myspace page this week--it just needs a bit more mixing. I think you'll like Fade, it's got a really dramatic classical piano intro that sounds like something out of a Bernard Hermann score. The song has a moody verse and a more rock-style chorus.

I would also like to invite you to join me for a great night of moody, atmospheric acoustic music at the Red Vic. I'll be playing a 45 minute set with a couple of really great musicians, Eric Vogler on Guitar/Bass, and John Rybak on Guitar. You can hear my music at www.myspace.com/rachelmargaretmusic. I am also joined by two other bands that evening, Adam Balbo, and Davis Jones.

Thanks so much for your support--I look forward to meeting you there.

Love,

Rachel

Concert Details:
Rachel Margaret
Wednesday, November 8th
Time: 7:45
Red Vic 1665 Haight Street
San Francisco, CA 94117

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview: In this workshop students will develop and improve their marketing skills so that they can stand out from the crowd and be taken more seriously by audiences, venues and the media. Working musician and award-winning public relations professional Tim Hart, owner of Hart Communications, will lead participants through an exploration of key concepts, including:

- Marketing and PR 101 - What do companies, nonprofits and even the government know that you don't about publicity? Learn concepts and skills on how to get noticed and be perceived as a serious professional.

- Tools of the trade - Press kits, online marketing, grassroots promotion, cross promotion and more. What's in your toolbox?

- Unleash your inner entrepreneur - Reshape how you present yourself and get the results you're looking for. Hear ideas and techniques on using an entrepreneurial approach to your outreach.

- Lights, camera, media - How the media functions and how you can work with local media to gain visibility. Learn to give effective interviews to print and broadcast media.

- Grassroots marketing - Reach your target audience without breaking the bank. Hear success stories and brainstorm how you can do it too.

- Networking for success - It truly is about "who you know." Techniques and ideas on meeting and developing valuable contacts -- and network with your classmates as well.

Who should attend: This workshop is for Bay Area musicians who want to increase visibility for themselves and their work. This is not a booking workshop, although the big-picture business and marketing techniques covered can help in the booking process.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About the instructor: Tim Hart is a performer, recording artist and owner of Hart Communications, an independent public relations consultancy serving clients in food & wine, health & wellness, community and the arts.
CD vs MP3

Do bookers still really use CDs to book gigs? Or do they go to your website and stream your music from MP3 files? I'm having this ongoing debate. I'm inclined to believe that bookers still want the actual disc, rather than a sheet of promo with a web link written down.

What's your experience? Have you gotten more gigs with the physical CD or have the MP3s online been enough to get you playing out?

we need an "in the pocket" drummer

Hi there. Our band "Formerly Known As" is looking for a solid, experienced drummer who can play a wide variety of styles, and with nuance. We play originals as well as tunes by Dylan, Marley, Neil, Buddy & Julie Miller, Gram Parsons, Van Morrison, Blues, Dead... Our current catalog is about 250 songs (or thereabouts). We rehearse Monday nights in Novato (a SUPERB studio setup) where there already is a very nice drum kit. We want to start gigging again in the fall. We've all been playing at least a couple of decades, so the music is pretty damn good. More importantly, we like to keep it relaxed and have fun. If this sounds good to you, please drop me a line. Thanks, and enjoy the music...
Looking for musicians for classic calypso side-project

We've got our vocalist, banjolele player, clarinetist and trumpeter...now I'm looking for the backbone stuff: guitarist (capable of swing style rhythm), upright bassist, percussionist (capable of Afro-Carribean styles).

We'll be performing the classic calypso of the '30s - '50s. Atilla the Hun, Lord Invader, Sir Lancelot, Lord Kitchener and other nobles... Although some of our members come from other areas, the band is based in the East Bay (Berkeley rehearsal space). You get an even split of whatever monies we make. Whatever that is. But we'd prefer working with people who like playing music for its own sake regardless.

PM me if you're interested or know of someone who's a good match. http://www.myspace.com/meganlynch

Hi there. Having a few musician friends over to jam tonight in Mill Valley -- dylan, originals, buddy & julie miller, some blues, etc. Our bass player is out of town, so if you want to play that would be great. Mandolin or violin is always nice, too. Cheers, James

Violist and oboist/english horn needed for Danish opera workshop

I'm working with a Danish librettist and Norwegian composer on an opera workshop project in Berkeley. It takes place around May 22-28. Not all these times are required. This year it's here, next year it's in Tromso, Norway.

If you contact me, I'll tell you more about it. It's a great project, the people are serious, oh, and the music is good and fun. It's a combination of traditional and experimental music.

If anyone has recommendations, I'd appreciate that too.

why my recording deal is BETTER than FREE

sure, i could record you in my bedroom, or in the subway corridors, using my powerbook. and sure, i could charge $5/ hour. or i could do it for free...

but that would be a waste of your energy. and money. time too.

so, that's not what i'm going to throw at you, bay area musicians. i respect your effort more than to go and use up your hard earned resouces on half mixed, partially recorded, phased out and quiet little masters.

nope.

i'm giving you the chance to do this like the big guys. i will fight to get you an affordable deal in the most sought after studio in SF. and i don't mean a 10% discount...

oh! but you gotta be worth it.

if you wanna keep playing for free, then you should continue recording the same way.

if not, we need to talk.

Howdy Peoplez,

My band Pets in Trees has a gig this Friday night, 3/31 at 330 Ritch. You can hear some song samples here:
www.myspace.com/petsintrees

We're new to the scene so don't have much press yet, but here's what one guy on Garageband had to say:

"Charming indie-rock pop song with a lovely lilting quality and a sound like a cross between Pavement and Elliott Smith... Generous spirited feel... Happy/sad and sunshine smiling thru the sadness... This has a really sweet natured vibe."

It's a Rip-Star Show, so there will be several good bands playing including:

-The Hooks
-Springfield
-Happily Ever After

There will also be DJs and an art exhibit.

Details -

Friday, March 31
330 Ritch Street, San Francisco
(Off of Townsend, between 3rd and 4th - Map)
8:00 p.m.
18+
$10 cover

We will also be playing at the Mission Creek Music Festival in a couple of months.

Hope you can make it!

Restrict music festivals @ Sharon Meadows in GG Park?!? -- Say No Way!

Date & Time: Thursday, March 16, 2006 more on this date
2:00 PM
Location: SF City Hall
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place
san francisco, CA view map

---------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, March 16 @ 2PM
SAN FRANCISCO CITY HALL, ROOM 416
---------------------------------------------------------------

Recently, the San Francisco Recreation & Park Commission drafted new sound restrictions for Sharon Meadows in Golden Gate Park (ie: "Hippy Hill" where "Reggae Fest" and "Alice, Now & Zen" take place). On Thursday, March 16, the Commission will meet to hear public comment on the drafted regulations.

Sunset Promotions is asking all those who LOVE OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVALS to attend this meeting and make your voice clearly heard.

We believe that these new regulations, though created by well-meaning and rational public officials, are unduly restrictive on ongoing outdoor music operationsin Sharon Meadow (specific objections below) and could set a bad precedent for ongoing music festivals throughout the city.

We are asking as many of that can, to please go to the Park & Rec hearing and say something as simple as...
"I support ongoing live music in Sharon Meadow and believe that local music festivals should be free to book and produce the music THEY feel is best for their artistic vision. I oppose additional fee increases, sound restrictions, and forcing Festivals to pay for the extra technicians that the new rules demand."
We have the following objections:

* The End of Rock: The new restrictions of decibel levels between 96 and 102 db basically outlaws any music other than acoustic, or classical. This would be a TRAVESTY in the meadow where Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Janis Joplin, and the Grateful Dead first made their voices heard, not to mention BB King, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse etc. It is not up to public officials to REGULATE TASTE and this sound level does exactly that.
* We're Paying for Golfers? It was widely reported recently that Park & Rec is facing a severe budget crisis due to losses suffered at their golf courses. Thus it is drastically hiking its fees on Music Events to help make up for the budget shortfall. Music Festivals are the city's most positive economic and cultural events and should not have to pay golfers greens fees.
* End of the Small Festival: Festivals are being charged for "Maximum Occupancy" of the site, whether 12000 people show up or 500. This means that only big companies with huge budgets will be able to afford to produce events here, ending such beautiful free grass roots affairs as Comedy in the Park.
* What's so BAD About Music?: All music must end at 5pm ANYWAY, so why the additional restrictions? Because one, seriously ONE neighbor, who dislikes anything but opera has been on a personal crusade to curtail live music in "his favorite portion of the park". This personal crusade is about to overshadow the thousands who like to gather and enjoy music in public spaces. NO WAY. MUSIC IS GOOD. Reasonable people need to RESTATE THIS DEBATE. We should be making it EASIER for little people to put on events that have big cultural and artistic significance.
* Needless Additional Costly Beaurocracy: The new regulations demand that several "sound technicians" be on hand to constantly monitor the sound levels, a cost that the festivals will need to cover. This excessive over-regulation of art is also so expensive that it will probably put several existing Sharon Meadow events OUT OF BUSINESS.

Soulful, Gigging, Groovin' band looking for Drummer

Hi,

Our style is groove-rock, with lots of funk and dashes of Latin. The vocals are soulful with heartfelt lyrics and stories, and the bass, keys and guitar are energetic and melodic. We're looking to rock original tunes as well as improvise with a tight unit.

We are currently playing with several professional drummers, but are looking for a dedicated band member. Rehearsal is in a home studio in Felton. We gig from San Luis Obispo to San Francisco and up to Arcata.

Ideal drummer has a firm rock and funk foundation, with Latin and reggae feels down as well. Great groove, feel and tone are essential. Severely soulful backbeats, baby! A jazz sensibility is great, not just in the sense of swinging or playing standards, but an open approach to music and improvisation with a lot of listening, dynamics, and fun.

Please check out some sound clips and more info at www.davesteinbubhub.com/.

Drummers we dig are Billy Martin, Steve Gadd, Bill Kreutzman, the James Brown guys (Jabo Starks, Clyde Stubblefield), the Sting and Zappa guys (Vinnie Coliuata, Omar Hakim), John Molo, Scott Rager, Scott Amendola, the groove of Motown/Stax-Volt/Muscle Shoals, and of course the list goes on.

The plan is lots of live shows and some studio albums leading to High Sierra Music Festival 2006 (hopefully).

Cheers!

If you are the man or woman for the job, you need to be able to rehearse regularly. You need to be able to learn parts that have already been written, and help write new parts for new pieces.
If you're the ideal candidate, your first gig with us will be on March 16 in San Francisco.
Contact me privately and I'll tell you more.

Drummer in Marin/Sonoma?

Hi there. We're looking for an accomplished drummer to play with our band PIE. You could consider us a very competent jam-band-with-vocals. We play in a broad range of styles, because that keeps the music fresh and interesting. We play originals as well as Marley, Neil Young, Buddy & Julie Miller, Bruce Cockburn, Dylan, Muddy Waters, Lucinda Williams and the list goes on. Right now we have an amazing large rehearsal space in Novato with a nice drum kit already there! We've each been playing 20 years plus, so the music is good, and we make fun a priority, too. If you have Thursday nights free, that would be a good start. Thanks, and enjoy the music!

vocalist plays with fire

I have the ability to record a full length album in a professional studio, gig, and possibly soundtrack a short film. I am interested in melding genres like:: soul + swing + funk + trip hop .or. 50's jingle + electro + punk.

Be fooled. I am crazy; planning invasions, skanking through grocery stores, and singing in the parking lot. I like transistor reggae be-bop hootenannies through rock and rumble piano fiestas and into power trip switch hop on roof-tops to street corners. I have a ridiculous amount of lyrics and songs and am also a free style vocalist.

So what you got. I can sing to it. Play anything. Any fucking thing. I am not afraid. Wheels screeching sweat pouring fire punk, sultry sexed-up Thursday morning house, boogalicous body thumping beats, freedom rock for toy instruments, funk punch for your thirsty palette: I CAN JAM.

I am looking for people who thrive music: bass - stand up/electric, flute/bass clarinet, keyboards/piano, drums- hand/kit, horns, turntables, guitar, violin/viola, poets and funkdafied producers. I am interested in collaborating on specific projects while also finding a cohesive group of musicians that are truly into each other, can travel cross country, laugh till four in the morning and thrash a basement as hard as a stage. I am a rocket. Give me the go. I'll light the fire

Hi,
I'm primarily a cover song artist looking to hook up with a keyboardist who may also sing. Duo band - U and I. for weddings, parties. It seems like DJs now get most of the work. I also know several drummers and bassists, currently have a 3 or 4 piece band, but don't know enough keyboard players to call on. I may have a New Years gig, and some pending holiday work. Please respond or email gomerhendrix@yahoo.com
